Lesson n. 5: The use of buffer letters-Conversation:Where is the cinema?


Listen to this conversation between a polic e officer and a pedestrian.The latter asks iformation about the cinema.

POLİS MEMURU:  İYİ AKŞAMLAR EFENDİM, BUYURUN.
AHMET:                 AFFEDERSİNİZ,  SİNEMA NEREDE?

                                                                 GRAMMAR NOTES

Buffer letters  (kaynaştırma harfleri) have the function of liaising two  consecutive vowels. In Turkish tehre are three different buffer letters each having a specifing purpose, H, N, S.

Y  is the buffer for indefinite usage, like linking two vowels while declining a noun, a verb, an adjecive or adverb to DATIVE or ACCUSATIVE.
Examples:

I am going to the cinema:    sinemaya gidiyorum

I see the car:   Arabayi  görüyorum

N ıs the buffer for specific usage as in the previous case. It is used in declension of compund nouns.
Examples:

I am going to the Hilton hotel:  Hilton oteli'ne gidiyorum

I am going to Bank Ziraat:  Ziraat Bankası'na gidiyorum

S is the buffer for specification complement.
Examples:

Wine bottle:  Şarap şişesi

Toothbrush:  Dış fırçası
