GRAMMATICAL NOTES
The formation of ordinal numbers in Turkish requires the use special suffixes to be attached to the cardinal numbers.
These suffixes are the following:
- inci -ıncı -üncü -uncu
The choice of the appropriate suffix depend on the ordinal number we want to obtain and goes by the vowel harmony rule.
To better explain this concept let's have a look at te following 4 cases and examples:
- Dominant or final vowel in the figures: -ı (there are no figures ending in "a")
Examples: altı (six) >>>> altıncı (the sixth)
otuzaltı ( thirty-six) >>>> otuzaltıncı ( the thirty -sixth)
2. Dominant or final vowel in the figures: -ö -ü
Ordinal suffıx to be attached: -üncü
Examples: Dört (four) >>>>>>>> dördüncü (here it is a case of Consonant mutation)
Seksen dört (eighty-four)>> Seksendördüncü (the eighty-fourth)
3. Dominant or final vowel in the figures: -o -u
Ordinal suffix to be attached: -uncu
Examples: Dokuz (nine)>>>>>>>>>>> dokuzuncu (the nineth)
Ellidokuz (fifthy-nine) >>>>Ellidokuzuncu (The fifthy-nineth)
4. Dominant or final vowel in the figures: -i -e
Examples: Yedi (seven) >>>>>>>>>>> yedinci (the seventh)
Yirmi beş (twenty-five) >>>> Yirmibeşinci (thetwenty-fifth)
